METALLICA Frontman's 2004 Performance On 'CMT Outlaws' Posted Online
March 8, 2006Video footage of METALLICA frontman James Hetfield's performance on the "CMT Outlaws" TV special, which premiered on the CMT network on Oct. 29, 2004, has been posted online at YouTube.com. James performed WAYLON JENNINGS' "Don't You Think This Outlaw Thing Has Gotten Out Of Hand" together with the house band of the day, as well as producer Bob Rock on bass. Jessi Colton, widow of Waylon Jennings, hit the stage right after to perform "Mama Said" together with James. At the end of the show James joined in the all-sing with Hank, Jr. and the rest of the performers for "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight" and "Family Tradition". Other guests on the show included BIG & RICH, Montgomery Gentry, Gretchen Wilson, Tanya Tucker, Kid Rock, and LYNYRD SKYNYRD.
"This was something really unique and different, I really had a good time," said James after the show.
Hetfield, who was 12 when "Wanted: The Outlaws" came out, told USA Today in a 2004 interview that he became a Jennings fan because of the singer's long hair and electric guitars but also for a more fundamental reason: "My dad liked him."
Later, when he and Jennings befriended each other, Hetfield's appreciation deepened.
"There were a lot of parallels — the business side, the people who always want to say 'no' to you, and then all the 'yes' men around you," he says. "We connected over that."
Jennings' wife Jessi Colter also sees parallels between Hetfield and her late husband.
"Some of this music's got originality," Colter says. "But what I'm looking for is the man — and James has broken the myth, just like Waylon. Waylon broke the Hank Williams myth. James has broken the heavy metal BS that you've got to be out of your mind to do anything."
